…in the Lower School
“Non Sibi Solum”…not for oneself alone…is no mere motto at Pike. Each fall, at an assembly of the Lower School, the Head of School speaks about the meaning of those words and how members of the Pike community take them to heart. Students, even in the youngest grades, learn about supporting the Neighbors in Need program by collecting food on “Rainbow Days.” These are monthly assemblies to which each class wears its special color, thereby forming part of a larger multicolored rainbow. Community service and respect for others are integral parts of a Pike education.
…in the Middle School
This volunteer program attracts large numbers of students eager to put into action Pike’s motto of “Non Sibi Solum.” Sewing fleece hats for the homeless; supporting the Great Dog Rescue program, which finds new homes for abandoned pets; collecting new and used books for ROR (Reach Out and Read), an organization that provides donated books to sick children at Children's Hospital in Boston; gathering food for the larder at Lazarus House; leading activities at Hancock Court daycare in Lawrence; and raising money for projects through carwashes are some of the community service activities in which you will find Middle Schoolers taking part. Some monies have gone to the Heifer Project to help fund a fish farm in Uganda and buy livestock in Kenya.
…in the Upper School
Drive through the pick-up line on a May afternoon, and you will be reminded that Pike is in the midst of its spring food drive for Lazarus House of Lawrence. Students with hand-painted signs stand amid bins piled high with canned goods. This perennial collection and other fundraising events are organized by the Student Council and Service Club, which also promote interaction with the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence, helping with homework, teaching computer skills, and generally lending a hand where needed. Student Council puts great effort into researching philanthropies to support.
