Student Backpack (Lower School)

Welcome, Lower School students and parents. You can find games, activities, and information for lower school classes on the pages listed below. Most of these games are just for fun. If you want more information that the librarians have prepared for some classroom lessons, visit the Library Resource Guides.

Grade 1

Reading

One More Story
Listen to stories that are read aloud, or try to read by yourself! (Parents: This site requires a family subscription. Our school subscription can only be used from Pike, alas!)

  Star Fall:  Learn To Read
Students learn letter sounds, vowel sounds, and consonant blends. Some activities include simple stories that students can read.
Star Fall: It's Fun To Read
These activities require that students read instructions for games and then play. As an aid, students can click specific words to hear them.
  Star Fall: I'm Reading!
Students read online stories. In some stories, students can hear the sentences by clicking an “ear” icon next to the sentence. In other stories students must read the sentences but can click specific words in the story to hear them.
  Reggie
Given an initial word, students must select other words that rhyme with it.
  Clifford's Letter Match
Students are shown two bins labeled with a letter (e.g., bin m or bin n). They must drag words beginning with matching letters into the bins. As they drag, the computer speaks the word.
  Puppy Letters
Students see and hear a sentence read aloud. In “easy mode”, one word of the sentence appears dim; in “hard” mode, one word is shown as blank lines for each letter. Students must drag letters from a list at the bottom of the screen atop the dimmed or missing word.
  Gawain's World
Students see and hear initial consonants and ending blends animated so that they collide to create a word.
Fuzzy Lion Ears (PBS Lions)
Fuzzy Lion Ears asks students to identify what letter is missing in a word that is spoken to them (they choose from a list).
  Chicken Stacker
Given a short vowel sound, students must read and select other words with the same sound.
Word Search
Students see a grid of squares each containing one letter. They must locate the consecutive squares in the grid that spell a given list of words.
Monkey Business
Students must put words in order to make a sentence.
Story Scramble
Students see three comic book frames containing words and pictures. They must read or listen to the frames and then put them in the proper sequence.

Telling Time

  Willie the Watchdog
Working in pairs, students play a game that involves matching analog and digital representations of time on the half-hour.
  Demonstration Clock
For exploration. The clock shows the actual time. You can add or take away time by 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or 1 hour. You can display the time on a digital or analog clock. You are learning from it, but not testing yourself.

Adding and Subtracting

  Test the Toad
Students see an equation of single-digit numbers and must select the sum or remainder.

Sequencing and Making Patterns

Complete the Pattern
Given a string of beads in a variety colors, students select the beads of the appropriate colors to complete the sequence.
Mend the Number Square
Students see a hundreds square with a few numbers missing. They must drag the missing numbers from a list into the proper place in the square.
Attribute Blocks (Select Attribute Blocks from the list.)
Students see a circle containing some attribute blocks. There are additional attribute blocks outside the circle. Students must figure out which characteristic (color or shape) the blocks inside the circle have in common and then drag in matching blocks from outside the circle.
