Grade 1 FUNction Box

This year's five teaching interns created and conducted a fun math exercise for the First Grade. The children took turns placing a number of blocks in a plastic tray. The number of blocks was recorded, and the tray was passed into the "In" slot of the FUNction Box. Moments later, the tray came back out through the "Out" slot, containing a different number of blocks, and that number was also recorded. Then the children had to state the "rule" that seemed to govern the result (+2, -1, etc.). To test whether their rule was correct, another child chose a new number of blocks to put into the "In" slot, and the class counted, in unison, the number of blocks that came back out. If the new results proved their rule to be correct, a happy face appeared above the box; if it proved to be wrong, a sad face would appear. Out of several rounds of trials, no sad faces ever appeared. These First Graders know their math.
