Grades 1 and 9 Quilts & Geometry
A wonderful partnership was struck in the first grade classroom as the Ninth Grade geometry students spent an afternoon with the First Graders, exploring design, symmetry, and patterning as a part of the First Grade unit on quilts.
The Ninth Graders, armed with compasses, straightedges, and computers, demonstrated how overlapping circles can create intricate designs and how other geometric figures--hexagons and triangles--emerge from the overlapping circles when points of intersections are joined.
First Graders, with the guidance of the Ninth Graders, had the opportunity to try out the geometric tools and create their own patterns, then color them to create symmetrical designs suitable for quilts. It was a very positive experience for both sets of students.
