Grade 5 Masks '08
With the help of parent volunteers, Fifth Graders took turns making plaster masks of each others' faces. By first applying a coating of vaseline to make removal easier, then a sheet of cellophane wrap with a breathing hole cut for the nose, and, lastly, strips of plaster mesh in built-up layers, students formed durable masks of their classmates' faces. Later, each student will personalize his or her own mask by decorating it with paint. Some of the students who were being worked on were a bit anxious about the unfamiliar sensation of having their face covered, while others where so relaxed they dozed off. The biggest ordeal turned out to be wiping off the greasy layer of vaseline and dealing with seriously unruly hair.
