Grade 6 Math: Checks and Balances
Mrs. Waters’s Sixth Grade math classes are "shopping" from each other's individually-made "catalogs" to practice percents (discounts and taxes) and to learn about writing checks and keeping a balance. Each student is both the proprietor of a business and a patron of the businesses of classmates. Starting out with an imaginary balance of $2,800 to spend and a catalog of wares to sell, each student must calculate the cost of discounted items, properly fill out checks, keep balances of expenses and income, and make sure they are receiving proper payment for their merchandise.
