Dear Parents,

We are pleased to announce our first Lower School Literacy Night to be held on February 24th from 5:45-7:00 p.m.

This evening will be a time to engage in enjoyable literacy activities with your child. Each student is welcome to bring one or two adult guests. Students and guest(s) will first go to the theater for a brief welcome and introduction. After that everyone will go directly to the students’ classrooms. The In Our Family photo exhibit will be on display in the theater lobby. Please feel free to arrive a few minutes early to view it.

Teachers have designed the following literacy activities for students and parents to enjoy together: Prekindergarten students and their guests will be spending their time creating original stories together:

Prekindergarten teachers ask that each Prekindergarten student bring one favorite stuffed animal. The result will be a compilation of all the stories for everyone to enjoy.

Kindergarten students and their guests will be talking about how to use puppets to enhance literacy and will watch a brief video titled, “Puppets Bring Literature to Life.” Students will then be making puppets with their parents. A simple script will be provided for acting out a story with their own puppets.

Grade One students and guests will begin to create a special, family memory book. Please bring one cherished item (ticket stub, photograph, award, treasure from nature, letter, postcard, art work) to get started. Teachers will provide a blank journal and many ideas for how to begin this family literacy project.

Grade Two will be exploring informational (nonfiction) books and Web sites. Many of our students are passionate about learning new things. There are many fabulous resources available for students and their parents for learning about sports, animals, crafts, science, and different cultures. Grade Two teachers will be joined by our librarians, Mrs. Mellin and Mrs. Griset.

We are excited about this new venture and look forward to seeing you there. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, February 24th.

Please RSVP by email to your child’s teacher by Friday, February 12th to let him/her know if you and your child will be able to come (or not) so the teachers can plan for the group.
