Subscription Databases

Subscription databases provide searchable access to magazine and encyclopedia articles as well as other specialized information. They are fee-based. They are not available through search engines or directories.

Grolier
Grolier Online is your first research stop on the Internet; it has over 35,000 articles with lots of pictures, maps, and web links. In addition to the encyclopedia articles, Grolier also contains an atlas and dictionary.

Take advantage of our newest subscription database, Culture Grams, a rich resource for information on countries, states, and provinces including local recipes, maps, and biographies.

InfoTrac is a collection of periodical databases with articles from reference books, newspapers, and magazines. Choose the database that best fits your need. Three of the most popular databases are highlighted below.
Kids InfobBits
KidsInfoBits from InfoTrac is a kid-friendly collection of articles from newspapers and magazines.  
Biography Resource Center
Biography Resource Center from InfoTrac includes biographies, pictures, and links to relevant web sites
OneFile
OneFile is database covering general information; you can find full-text magazine articles on most topics.


Massachusetts Newstand from ProQuest provides full-text articles from the Boston Globe and other local newspapers.

eLibrary
eLibrary gives you access to magazine and newspaper articles, maps, books, pictures, videos, and even TV and radio transcripts.


These databases are provided by the Northeast Massachusetts Regional Library System, NMRLS, through state funds administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

Are you having trouble logging in to the databases from home?

Grolier Online and eLibrary

  • Access to these sites requires that their URLs have been added to your Norton Internet Security/Norton Personal Firewall as trusted sites. This only needs to be done once and then you will be able to access the sites by entering your public library card number when prompted to do so.
  • Directions for this process are available on the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners log-in page (http://mblc.state.ma.us/cgi-bin/remote.pl).
  • Click on Log-in Help and scroll down to Technical Questions.
  • Follow the directions under - "Why do I keep getting prompted for a username or password when I log on to a magazine or newspaper database?"
  • Click on Symantec notice for help in adding a trusted site.

InfoTrac

  • For any of the InfoTrac databases, just enter your 10-digit public library card number when prompted to do so.
