Newcomers to the Pike community may encounter terms, acronyms, and concepts that have become engrained in the Pike vernacular over long years of use. After a while, they become familiar and are used as a matter of course. But their meanings to the uninitiated are anything but self-evident.

To speed your acclimation, we offer this glossary.

6th, 7th, 8th       Grade Teams The team of advisors in a particular grade. They are led by a Team Leader, who supports the other advisors and oversees the academic and social development of all the students in the grade.
Advisor An Upper School homeroom teacher; the point person for the student and parents
Anchor Rooms Lower and Middle School homerooms
Anchor Teacher        A Lower or Middle School homeroom teacher; the teacher with whom the student begins and ends the day; the point person for the student and parents
Chewonki Traditional Ninth Grade personal-growth and team-building canoe trips on the St. Croix River, which forms the border of Maine and New Brunswick, Canada; twice yearly in September and February; run by the Chewonki Foundation
Cubby  Rooms

ERBs Educational Records Bureau standardized tests
Farnsworth The Upper School building
FLEX Pike's after-school program
Grieco Building Lower School
Horne Building Middle School
I Block The last period on Monday and Friday when all teachers are free and students can see them for extra help or just have an extra study period
Kieve Traditional Sixth Grade, five-day trip to Kieve Leadership Decisions Institute in Nobleboro, Maine, usually in September
LS Lower School (Grades Pre-K through 2)
MPR The Celeste Wetherell Multipurpose Room (across from the Library)
MS Middle School (Grades 3 through 5)
MSSC Middle School Service Club
Non sibi solum Pike's motto: Not for oneself alone
PA Parents Association
Peaches, Pears, etc. Names of traveling groups (see below) for each grade
Sargent Camp Traditional Fifth Grade, five-day, personal growth and team-building trip to Peterborough, New Hampshire, usually in October
Traveling Groups Groups with whom Pre-K through Fifth Grade students go to phys. ed., music, and art; these are different from their anchor groups, allowing them to meet new classmates.
US Upper School (Grades 6 through 9)
