Sustainability at Pike

Sustainability has been an ongoing initiative of the Pike School for the past couple of years,  but this year we are making a concerted effort to identify it as one of our main school goals.  The new Sustainability Committee consists of more than twenty faculty, staff, parents, and administrators divided into five subcommittees that are focusing on the following areas:  Energy, Education, Composting, Transportation and Parent Awareness, and Snack Policy.

In addition, the school-wide recycling program is run by the Ninth Grade and supervised by advisors Lucas Schroeder and Slaviana Peeva.

Students are involved in the Sustainability Initiative through their own club, Big Green, which meets once a week and promotes public awareness and education; investigates sundry sustainability topics and competitions; and coordinates its efforts with other committees to ensure that the student and adult communities are working together to make Pike a more environmentally responsible school.

A suggestion box for ideas is available in the front lobby, so please share information with us that can help as we move forward this year.

Goals for 2008-2009
  • To educate the community about the value and necessity of becoming a sustainable environment
  • To investigate ways to become more sustainable in energy use, waste management, curriculum, and use of materials
  • To Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
  • To develop a Three Year Plan that will lead Pike to becoming a more sustainable school.
