Student Help Online

Take a look at our online help system for students in grades 3 and up. A combination of text, animations, and movies, the  colorful and easy-to-read pages explain how to accomplish basic technology tasks that all students come to know here at Pike. The same pages are available in printed form in most classrooms where computers are used frequently.

Internet Safety: Digital Families

Blogger Liz Losh's 10 Principles for the Digital Family suggests many useful strategies for embracing children's digital lives, sharing their experiences, and opening conversations with them about the risks and benefits. Ms. Losh teaches rhetoric and composition at University of California, Irvine.

While most experts, like Losh, suggest that the best way to monitor children's Internet use is to talk to them, recently automated services have become available to monitor children's activities. We have not used these services at Pike, since we can monitor students' Internet use directly, but would be interested in any thoughts you have about them. As one example, visit BeNetSafe. Please note that there is a monthly fee for the service.
