The Pike School Lower School Reading and Writing Specialist

APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 28, 2014

The focus of the reading and writing specialist is to improve the achievement of students who have met challenges in learning to read and write. After analyzing students' needs and abilities, the specialist directly teaches individuals and small groups and prescribes instruction for the regular classroom.

The specialist will work directly and effectively with children in grades Pre-K to two in a variety of settings. This may be within a heterogeneous reading and writing group, in a small group of struggling readers or writers, in a one-on-one intervention setting, or in support of a whole class to enhance their overall reading and writing program.

This specialist will also work directly and collaboratively with grade level teaching teams in team meetings, child study meetings, as a one-on-one coach, and as a leader in professional development about reading and writing. Additionally, the reading/writing specialist will provide insight and develop strategies for reading and writing curricula and practices on a systemic level across the division or in concert with other divisions.

Requirements in Education/Experience:
Candidates will have a B.A., an M.A. with a concentration in reading and writing education, previous experience as a reading and writing specialist, a valid teaching certification, and previous elementary teaching experience.

Fourth Grade Teaching Position

The successful candidate will teach language arts, mathematics, and social studies.   Practicing differentiated instruction, self-motivated and connect well with children are key characteristics.  Elementary teaching experience, strong collaborative skills, and a BA are required. A Master’s Degree and knowledge of PLC practices are preferred. Salary is commensurate with experience.
