Teacher Training Program

Comprehensive
Designed for people with little previous teaching experience, The Pike School/Lesley University Collaborative Teacher Training Program seeks to develop reflective, visionary educators. This one year, full immersion teacher training program leads to Massachusetts initial licensure and a master’s degree in elementary education. This program is ideal for those who are motivated to teach elementary school aged children and who want to learn to do so in an academically rigorous and highly supportive environment. 

Intensive
Built on the belief that one must join practice with theory, Pike interns spend the first summer on the Lesley main campus working with the University faculty. With a strong foundation in place, this small group, consisting of six interns, comes to Pike in late August to begin the school year as fully participating members of the Pike faculty. The ten months that follow allow interns to develop their teaching skills in two different classroom placements, with the support of directing teachers, the program director and one another. Additionally, interns participate in site-based courses taught by Pike faculty and outside specialists. Coursework at Pike is supplemented by a small number of classes taken on Lesley’s campus.

Selective
Candidates must have successfully completed a bachelor’s degree program, find joy in their interactions with children, and have exhibited a commitment to working in teams. Pike encourages people of varying ages, experiences, and backgrounds to apply.
 

After interviewing on Pike’s campus, candidates apply directly to The Pike School Teacher Training Program using the Lesley University Admissions Application. Admission decisions are made by the Pike Admissions Committee on a rolling admission basis. The completed application and the decision are then forwarded on to the Lesley University Office of Admission with the consent of the applicant.

Supportive
As part of our commitment to diversifying and supporting the teaching corps, Pike has established two merit and several need-based grants.

The Intern Scholar Grants, two $10,000 merit-based grants, are open to men and people of color who meet the following criteria:

  • Completion of a B.A. or B.S. at a four year accredited college or university with a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher
  • Demonstration of a strong commitment to children and elementary education
  • Demonstration of a commitment to multiculturalism
