Dear Families,
Happy New Year, and Welcome Back!
We hope that you all had a healthy and restorative winter break!
Norovirus is on the rise in the Northeast
Massachusetts has recently observed a rise in cases of Norovirus (known as the “stomach bug” or “stomach flu”). Norovirus is a very contagious virus that causes vomiting or diarrhea. Other symptoms can include nausea, stomach pain, fever, headache, and body aches.
We wanted to remind everyone that hand sanitizer does NOT prevent the spread of Norovirus (and many other viruses); we strongly encourage proper hand washing often (20 seconds). Consider these additional tips for the prevention of norovirus.
Respiratory Viruses
Pneumonia (specifically mycoplasma pneumoniae and walking pneumonia) and the flu are also circulating widely in our communities.
We wanted to share this resource which offers symptoms (specific to each virus), and suggestions for comfort and care.
General Guidelines when to keep your child home
Consider keeping your child(ren) at home for extra rest and observation if they have any of the following symptoms:
Very stuffy or runny nose and/or cough
Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)
Headache
Stomachache
Decreased appetite
General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness or muscle aches
Definitely keep your student at home for treatment and observation if they have any of these symptoms:
Fever (greater than 100 degrees. Your child may return to school only when fever-free for a minimum of 24 hours)
Vomiting (even once, must be vomit free for 24 hours before returning)
Diarrhea (even once, must be diarrhea free for 24 hours before returning)
Frequent and persistent cough that would be disruptive to the learning process
Thank you for your continued support for a safe and healthy winter season.
Or: Thank you for your continued commitment to keep our school healthy!
