A Warm Welcome to Pike's Incoming Head of Upper School

We are delighted to share that after an extensive national search, Madeline Surgenor Richards will be Pike’s next Head of Upper School, effective July 1, 2025. Madeline brings a strong background in teaching and school leadership, along with a deep appreciation for middle school students and the essential role Pre-K–9 schools play in a child’s development. Her warmth, collaborative spirit, and commitment to student-centered decision-making align beautifully with Pike’s values of Authenticity, Intellectual Ambition, and Social Good.

Upon learning of her appointment, Madeline shared, “It’s with great excitement that I join Pike’s community! Each person I met during my search process welcomed me with kindness and openness. Students and colleagues alike clearly live the motto of Non Sibi Solum in daily school life. I can’t wait to join Upper School colleagues in the important work of supporting students through their upper division years.”

Madeline currently serves as Head of Upper School at Worcester Academy and has previously held roles as Dean of Academic Success and Associate Dean of Student Life. Earlier in her career, she spent six years at the Bement School, where she taught middle school math and served as Head of the Mathematics Department. She is a graduate of Wellesley College and holds a Master of Arts in Private School Leadership from the Klingenstein Center at Teachers College, Columbia University.

Madeline’s experience, thoughtful leadership, and genuine care for young people will be a tremendous asset to our community. We are excited to welcome her to the Pike community and look forward to all she will bring to the Upper School!
