For Tom Lynch, history is not a static collection of dates, but a vibrant series of "connected threads." Since joining Pike in the fall of 1987, Tom has dedicated his career to helping students think deeply and broadly. Whether leading the eighth-grade history research paper, a tradition he started in his very first year that is still a pillar of the program today, or navigating the complexities of the modern world, his goal has remained constant: to accompany students as they reach new intellectual heights.
"Pike students are willing to rise to the challenge, and that’s one of the things I love most about teaching here,” Tom reflects. He takes immense pride in seeing students engage with topics of their own choosing, granting them a sense of agency that transforms a standard assignment into a personal capstone of analytical thinking. For Tom, the greatest reward is watching students have those ‘aha’ moments and discover their own voices as historians.
“I’m known for being a challenging teacher, but Pike students are eager to meet the high bars we set for them. They put in the work outside of the classroom, engage deeply while in class, and become true thought partners for me, challenging me with questions I’ve never even considered. After all these years teaching eighth grade, I can say with certainty, I don’t know it all. My students teach me something new every day, and that’s what’s kept me here.”
The Evolution of an Educator: From Chalkboards to AI
With nearly four decades at Pike, Tom’s tenure predates the arrival of the internet in schools. Yet, rather than resisting change, he has treated every technological shift as a new opportunity to innovate. Most recently, he has worked alongside the tech department to incorporate AI into student projects, proving that a veteran educator can remain at the forefront of pedagogical evolution.
"Technological changes have been revolutionary, and that motivates me to adapt and find new ways to help students reach the same high levels of learning while keeping the essential outcomes the same." This commitment to lifelong learning is the same advice he offers to the next generation of teachers: to work as hard as they expect their students to work and to never stop learning from the wonderful teachers and classrooms that surround them.
Beyond the Classroom: Taking History on the Road
Some of Tom’s most cherished memories aren't within the four walls of his classroom. Over the years, he has been a fixture on Pike’s iconic trips, from the eighth-grade journey to Washington, D.C., to an immersive history tour in Italy. These experiences have allowed him to see his students in a new light, witnessing their growth as global citizens as they engage with the world firsthand.
His impact is also felt in his role as an advisor, where he emphasizes the importance of listening. If he could go back to his first day in 1987, he would tell his younger self to "ask more questions of fellow teachers and listen to more stories from my students." It is this practice of deep listening and mutual respect that defines his relationship with generations of Pike students.
The Heart of the Journey: A Life Woven into Pike
When asked to pick three words that describe his Pike experience, Tom chose family, flexibility, and community, which carry both professional and deeply personal meanings. Pike isn’t just a community built on shared principles; it’s where his most important life stories have unfolded. “Pike is family. I met the love of my life here, got to teach one of my sons, and was able to coach basketball alongside my other son.”
He also values the flexibility and openness to share ideas about teaching and learning. “As an educator, I have never wanted to be the kind of teacher who does the same thing year after year. I could teach anywhere, but at Pike, teaching and learning are always evolving, and that’s what keeps me motivated and engaged.”
This sense of connection has been the anchor of his 39 year career, creating a legacy that is as much about relationships as it is about academic excellence.
A Fond Farewell: The Next Great Exploration
As Tom prepares to close his final chapter at Pike, he is ready to trade the classroom for the open road and wilderness trails. His retirement plans include more time for traveling, reading, and pursuing his love of all outdoor activities. Just as he encouraged his students to be curious about the world, he is looking forward to exploring it at his own pace, with the same sense of wonder he brought to his history lessons.
In a career spent helping students uncover and connect the threads of history in meaningful ways, Tom has also left an indelible mark on Pike’s own. From the research paper tradition that continues to challenge students today to the innovative spirit he champions, Tom’s influence is a permanent part of the school's foundation.
